The Joy of Chewing Toys For A Puppy
Dogs will chew, and that’s a fact. Some are aggressive chewers, some not so, but all will chew. Most pups will chew vigorously over the first year of teething, and lessen off after that, but do continue to chew over their entire lifespan. Much research has gone into this natural instinct in a dog and the conclusion and consensus is that they chew for a number of reasons, not just the one long held belief that they chew only during teething, and then stop.
As dog owners we must now understand that a puppies chewing, is natural and will be ongoing for its entire lifespan. One of the biggest concerns from a dog owner perspective, is that when a family pet begins to attack the furniture, or chew on shoes, or household items that they just should not, well what then?
So why do our pets chew in the first place?
The main reasons for chewing are;
- A puppies natural instinct compels it to chew during about the first twelve months as puppy teeth get replaced by adult teeth.
- A puppy explores its world with its mouth, so naturally will bite and chew on something to discover what it is, and whether it is food, or just something good, bad or indifferent.
- Chewing relieves stress in a puppy.
- Separation anxiety issues when the owners have to leave can cause a puppy to seek comfort and distraction in chewing on something.
- If a puppy smells its owners scent on something, like shoes, socks, and so forth, then it is likely to chew on these items if it does not have an alternative.
- It’s fun for a puppy or dog to chew on things.
- Boredom relief when left alone for over too long periods at a time.
- Not having boundaries established, set, and understood in the home by the pet parents.
Can my puppy chew on everything that I give it, or are some chews better than others, and what are the dangers to look out for?
First of all, and this is through a hard learned life lesson with my own Beagle, Oakie, you should avoid certain products as chews, even though they are well marketed as such, they do have some hidden dangers that a pet owner should take notice off. Rawhides are an organic material, made from dried animal skins, usually pig, and are billed as safe and healthy for a puppy and dog. Something that is organic is also de-gradable and can be ingested by the pet. The ingested material can swell in the pups throat or digestive tract causing many problems for the puppy. This occurred with my Beagle, and was a very expensive trip to the emergency pet hospital for me. All you want your puppy to swallow ought to be food.
What are the main benefits of chewing for my puppy, other than what was previously mentioned?
Dental health in our pets has taking leaps and bounds forward over the years, as science and the vet industry have come to realize that strong teeth and gum health will lead to a healthy and happy pet living to the fullest of its lifespan without major health issues.

Cotton Chew Ropes
Chew ropes are a necessary toy for puppies and dogs. To-day chew ropes are considered in the same vein as dental floss is for a human, in that the cotton strands get between the pups teeth, when chewing on the rope, thereby cleaning those spaces that otherwise may not get cleaned. Dogs need to chew. They do this while in the puppy phase while they are teething, and they do it instinctively to help to clean their teeth. If a dog does not have a chew toy that they can destruct, then they may turn to household items like furniture. These strong cotton rope chew toys are designed for heavy chewing and daily use. Will help to direct a dog’s attention away from destructive chewing tendencies. They are great to be left in the pup’s area as a chew, or are great at the park for hours of fun.
